A note to all artists applying for 2016

The museum residency whilst ready for realisation on the heritage site- is at this point still awaiting the confirmation of expected funds - and upon which the residency depends.

Artists interested in a residency should be aware of the last minute confirmation of funds for this may affect your travel plans and air ticket prices.

All artist applications which are not accepted for this year, will come into consideration for the subsequent years.

What the Kastel residency offers to the artist

The Kastel residency will provide secure working space within the large open gardens within the ramparts of the Castle Rusinac, in Kastel Luksic, to two artists at a time, for  a period of two weeks, during July 2016. The kitchen / dining room / bathroom within the castle are available for artists use during the day.

There will be a public exhibition organised by the Museum of Kastela, at the end of both the two week residencies for the artists.
The residency will secure that various media follow up for the residency of all the artists and their exhibitions .

For the duration of the art residency the artists will be provided with a cost free apartment  reachable from Rusinac by a walk or bike .

The residents will be provided with a bike during their time in Kastela to enable easier movement and further exploration of the Kastelan riviera.

The residents will receive a grocery fund at a local supermarket as well as a fund for a number of meals in one of the local restaurants.

The artists will receive a fund at the art shop in Split  to purchase materials.

The residents will get to meet local artist/curators and explore the  larger area  in arrangement with the project curator.

Rezidencija osigurava umjetnicima sigurno radno mjesto za stvaralaštvo, unutar zidina Kaštela Rušinac, u Kaštel Lukšiću, na period do 2 tjedna tokom ljeta 2016.

Rezidencija osigurava umjetnicima besplatan smještaj za spavanje na lokciji blizu Kaštela Rušinac u hostelu s privatnim apartmanom- s mogučnosti kuhinje u kojoj rezident može sebi pripraviti hranu.

Kaštel Rušinac može po dogovoru u određenom vremenu biti otvoren javnosti, u stilu živućeg muzeja-ateljea, kako bi posjetitelji mogli vidjeti napredak I rad umjetnika te se upoznati s umjetkom, ali nije potrebno da umjetnici svo vrijeme drže vrata otvorena.

Rezidencija osigurava medijsku pratnju I promociju projekta kroz medije I društvene mreže.Tokom rezidencije umjetnici su predstavljeni lokalnoj publici kroz serije interviua na radiju, televiziji, novinama.

Rezident na kraju svog  vremena u Kaštelima predstavlja izložbu svojih radova široj javnosti koju organizraju voditelji Rezidencije, Voditelji rezidencije pozivaju goste na otvorenje izložbe. Lokacija izložbe, I popratni sadržaj  se dogovara s umjetnikom u hodu I kroz suradnje s drugim izviđaćima.

How to apply for a colaboration with residents - for local artists

Kako aplicirati za suradnju sa rezidentima , ili suradnju sa rezidencijom tokom ljeta.

Lokalni umjetnici zainteresirani za suradnju s Rezidencijom ili umjetnicima na rezidenciji tokom ljeta mogu poslati svoje molbu za u kojoj predstavljaju svoj rad I sebe, te link na bibliografiju I primjere rada.

Please email the proposition or concept for what you plan to create in the residency .*

Conditions of the Art residency

The challenge of this residency is that the artist using their own language, expression, techniques, concepts and means of work- uses their time in the Kastel residency to explore an element of Kastela which the artist finds interesting and which is in tune with their work .. (For example -geology, history, people, customs, flora, fauna, architecture, archeology, interaction with local people...) This site specific investigation ought to be expressed in the works executed at the residency.

The artist at the end of the residency donates an art work produced in the residency, to the art collection of the Museum of Kastela .

During their time at the residency , the artist will keep the residency open to the public, at certain arranged times of the day, so that the public have a chance to experience and observe the development and see an artist at work.

At the end of the residency the artist will show their works at a public exhibition.



Uvjeti rezidencije za umjetnike.

Zadatak ove rezidencije umjetniku je - da umjetnik koristeći se svojim umjetničkim jezikom, izražajem, tehnikama , konceptima , I načinom  rada , upotrijebi svoje vrijeme u rezidenciji da istraži okolicu, da istraži element Kaštela, koji je umjetniku interesantan,(geologija, povijest, ljudi, običaji, životinje, flora, arhitektura, arheologija, interakcija a s ljudima itd. ) i u skladu s radom umjetnika, te da nam predoči tu site specific istragu kroz radove koji se proizvedu u rezidenciji.


Umjetnik na kraju rezidencije ostavlja jedan rad fundusu Muzeja Grada Kaštela.

Umjetnici su uvjetovani držati rezidenciju otvorenu posjetiteljima, određene sate po dogovoru, kako bi zainteresirani mogli vidjeti njihov rad u stvaranju.

Koncem rezidencije umjetnik će predstaviti javnosti izložbu radova proizvedenih u rezidenciji.

The Brief History of the Kastel Residency

Kastel residency is a project of the Artist Suncica Kuzmanic (Perisin Tomljanovic) which began in the year 2007. The reason of embarking on such a project was the lack of a simmilar residency in the region, whilst a large number of artist friends where staying at Sunci's studio in Kastel Kambelovac, and delighted by Kastela and the life in the mediteranian small town, they painted, wrote, photographed, produced installations. The wish to make this enchanting place available to more artists, inspired Suncica to open up her own studio as a residency.

There are so called residencies in Croatia- where artists are invited to eat and drink and create industriously in exchange for leaving all the work they create as a price for their stay. The quality of such work is always questionable.

The aim of the Kastel Residency is to provide selected artists with a place to create and stay. To host the artist in a way that they may get to know the region, the people, enjoy the life style of the charming small  sea side town, full of life and character, and that in exchange that the artist makes works inspired by their arrival in some way. The perceptions of artist may in turn  open up the eyes of the local people to the beauty, details, that the locals fail to observe or apriciate and which can only be pointed out by someone with fresh eyes.

An important element of the residency is the potentional for international exchange, the introduction of  the local artists and curators to the artist in residence , enabling future  collaborations and projects, as well as potential exhibitions for the residents in other local institutions.

Kastel Residency and the Museum of the city of Kastela

This year 2016 the project Kastel Art residency is expanding, and Kastel Residency will be  entering the Museum of Kastela space, and  summer programe to become a part of the living museum.

The residency which had upuntil now hosted artists in private accommodation is relocating to new , much larger city space available to the Museum,  to the astounding grounds of the heritage castle Rusinac, in Kastel Luksic. In the city space, visitors can visit the artist at work, observe the progress of art works, come in to contact with the artist, making the residency  interactive with the public.

The very Castle Rušinac in this way is being rejuvenated and brought to life. A new creative energy is entering the old castle -whose late owner was in fact a painter- and who together with his lady wife was, a lover of culture and arts, and had generously donated the castle to the city of Kastela

The exterior work spaces

Bearing in mind the residency is available only during the summer months when the weather in general is, very hot, and sunny for months- with a maybe freak day of rain at the end of August. The spaces available for work are the open gardens of the castle, the large terrace with a roof and plenty of shade from the sun, and two small stone sheds in the garden.

Artists applying to the residency must bear in mind that there are no high tech gadgets available for use during residency. Once you enter the Castle grounds- in some way you enter the past- and the most advanced thing there exists on the grounds of this residency-is electricity.  

The Interior of the Castle Rušinac

The Castle having been generously given to the City of Kastela by the previous owners, is still full of the possessions of the late owners.

The house is furnished with a mix of beautiful Dalmatian antiques, and a lot of details- which are evidence of the couples life time, and various tastes belonging to the different periods the couple had lived trough- the sixites, the seventies, the eightees communism, nationalism, as well as crafts produced over the years using seashells from their sea garden. There is also  a presence  of  tired old age and unability to keep it all looking trim at the end..

The interior gives a feeling of being some grandparent's home, and the whole life, picturees, cups, plates it is all there ,to accommodate the visitor to enjoy their house

To enter the Castle Rušinac  one passes trough the North- lush green gardens..

..The South of Castle Rušinac is located in the Adriatic Sea. The rooms over looks the sea - and the waves reach and jump up towards the windows on stormy days.

Enter The Gardens

Entering the gardens, and surrounded by high ramparts, we find ourself withim lugh green oasis of gardens, which breathes and smells of the past and enchantement. This large garden of orange trees, palms, agave,  bay leaf, and soft grass,  will be a delightefull place for work and pleasure.

Prođevši kroz vrata I visoke zidine koje što Kaštel Rušinac, nađemo se u prekrasnom zelenom oazom vrtova koji odišu sa prošlosti i čarolijom . Ovaj golemi vrt, naranča, palmi lovora i mekanih travnjaka inspirirati će umjetnike, te biti prekrasno mjesto za rad I užitak.
